CINCINNATI — Prasco Laboratories has signed a pact with Shire for the U.S. distribution of an authorized generic version of Carbatrol extended-release capsules, a medication for seizures.

Prasco said Thursday that under the agreement, it will distribute the generic Carbatrol (carbamazepine) in the United States under the Prasco label in strengths of 100 mg, 200 mg and 300 mg.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Carbatrol is used to treat certain types of seizures (partial, tonic-clonic and mixed) as well as some types of nerve pain (trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia), according to Prasco.

"We are pleased to provide carbamazepine extended-release capsules to pharmacists and consumers," Prasco chief executive officer Christopher Arington stated. "As a Prasco authorized generic, carbamazepine extended-release capsules will provide patients with a therapeutically equivalent product to the brand."
