HAMBURG, Germany — Everyday essentials and frequently replenished products are expected to be among the fastest-growing e-commerce categories through 2030, according to new projections from ECDB, an e-commerce market intelligence firm.

They indicate that categories such as cleaning equipment, baked goods, meal kits, detergents, and gardening products are poised for strong online growth. Unlike electronics and other big-ticket purchases traditionally associated with e-commerce, these categories benefit from frequent purchases and opportunities for retailers to build recurring relationships with shoppers.

Cleaning equipment, including mops, brooms, cleaning cloths, sponges, and scrubbers, is projected to lead the group, with a compound annual growth rate of 23.8% from 2025 to 2030.

Baked goods are forecast to grow at a 20.8% CAGR as bread, pastries, cakes, and other fresh products become more common in online grocery baskets. Improvements in quick-commerce networks and delivery infrastructure for perishable foods are helping expand the category’s online potential.

Meal kits are expected to post a 19.1% CAGR through 2030. The category combines convenience with recurring purchasing behavior, particularly through subscriptions and repeat orders, allowing consumers to receive ingredients and recipes without making a separate grocery trip.

Detergents are another category well positioned to benefit from replenishment-based shopping. Laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, and household cleaners are regularly consumed products that can be incorporated into subscriptions and automated reordering programs.

Plants and seeds round out the five highlighted categories, with online sales projected to grow at a 16.9% CAGR. Consumers have become increasingly comfortable buying plants, shrubs, herbs, fruit trees, and seeds online as retailers improve packaging and fulfillment for living products.

The projections indicate that replenishment is an increasingly important driver of e-commerce growth. Faster delivery, expanding online grocery networks, and easier price comparisons are reducing barriers that once kept consumers from buying everyday necessities online.

Automated reordering could further accelerate the shift. As the technology becomes more widely adopted, retailers and brands may be able to turn routine household consumption into predictable online purchasing cycles.

The trend also has implications for customer retention. Frequently replenished products give retailers more opportunities to establish purchasing habits and increase lifetime customer value than categories characterized primarily by occasional transactions.
