SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — H.D. Smith has appointed Mark de Bruin as corporate vice president of managed care.

The pharmaceutical distributor said Tuesday that de Bruin will be responsible for the company’s Third Party Network, creating and maintaining an alliance of prescription and health care service providers focusing on initiatives to support quality patient outcomes and provider reimbursement as well as achieve sales and profit goals.

With 29 years of pharmacy and managed care experience, de Bruin most recently served as chief executive officer of Asteres Inc, a provider of automated technology solutions to retail pharmacies, supermarkets, hospitals and the military.

His retail pharmacy and managed care background includes stints at Rite Aid Corp., where he served as executive vice president of pharmacy; Albertsons/American Stores, where he was vice president of pharmacy and managed care; and RxAmerica/American Stores, where he served as president and general manager. He also is a registered pharmacist.

"Our Third Party Network is one of the many solutions H. D. Smith developed to address efficiency and reimbursement demands facing community pharmacies. Mark’s retail pharmacy experience, cultivated at Rite Aid Corp., together with his significant managed care and pharmacy government affairs acumen will spark growth and development of the network to the benefit of our customers," Chris Smith, chief operating officer of H. D. Smith, said in a statement.

H. D. Smith’s Third Party Network acts as liaison between pharmacies and health care plans, negotiating rates and services for customers such as community pharmacies.
