QUINCY, Mass. – Ahold Delhaize USA said Tuesday that Roger Wheeler, currently chief commercial officer for the company, will take the helm as president of Stop & Shop, effective September 30. He will succeed Gordon Reid, who will retire from the company in mid-2025.

Wheeler, a Massachusetts native, brings over 30 years of supermarket industry experience to his new role, including nearly two decades with Ahold Delhaize USA and Stop & Shop. In his most recent position as Chief Commercial and Supply Chain Officer, he led initiatives that transformed the company’s commercial capabilities and streamlined efficiencies, according to the company, resulting in both cost savings and increased sales. Previously, Wheeler served as President of Retail Business Services, spearheading large-scale transformations in supply chain and IT, and maximizing team effectiveness in key areas such as procurement and pharmacy services.

JJ Fleeman, CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA, expressed confidence in Wheeler's ability to lead Stop & Shop through its next chapter of growth.

“Roger is a proven leader who is passionate about the customer experience, knows the market, and has an outstanding track record of building a strong organizational culture,” Fleeman said. “I am confident in his ability to reposition Stop & Shop and deliver on our Growing Together strategy commitments.

Wheeler, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, holds an MBA from Bentley University. His career with Ahold Delhaize USA began in 2005, when he joined Stop & Shop as Vice President of Meat and Seafood. Reflecting on his new appointment, Wheeler expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the brand: “It’s an honor to rejoin Stop & Shop in this leadership role. I look forward to working alongside our team to deepen customer loyalty, operate great stores, and deliver excellent service every day.”

Stop & Shop, headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts, is an omnichannel retailer serving millions of customers across five states. With over 50,000 associates, the company operates more than 350 stores, 213 pharmacies, 98 fuel stations, and an extensive network of online pickup hubs and grocery delivery services.

Wheeler emphasized his commitment to advancing the company’s strategy of growing through large, multi-year price investments and strengthening customer value.

“Together, we will grow the Stop & Shop business, be a top employer in our markets, and create great experiences for our associates,” he said.

Gordon Reid, who has led Stop & Shop since 2019, will remain with Ahold Delhaize USA until mid-2025 to support strategic initiatives. Reid, who previously led Giant Food, expressed pride in the work accomplished during his tenure and gratitude for the dedication of Stop & Shop’s associates.

“It has been an honor to lead the Stop & Shop brand. I’m extremely proud of all we have achieved together, and I wish Roger and the entire team all the best for the future,” Reid said.
