Rolaids Softchews recalled by J&J’s McNeil

In another recall, Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit is pulling back all lots of the soft chewable versions of its Rolaids antacid.

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. — In another recall, Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit is pulling back all lots of the soft chewable versions of its Rolaids antacid.

McNeil said Thursday that it’s voluntarily recalling all lots of Rolaids Extra Strength Softchews, Rolaids Extra Strength plus Gas Softchews and Rolaids Multi-Symptom plus Anti-Gas Softchews distributed in the United States. The company noted that the recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration.

The Rolaids recall stems from consumer reports of foreign materials in the product, including metal and wood particles, according to McNeil. The company said its investigation has determined that the materials were potentially introduced into the product during the manufacturing process at a third-party manufacturer.

McNeil reported that the risk of serious adverse health consequences is remote, but it’s advising consumers who have purchased recalled products to discontinue use.

Production of the recalled Rolaids products is being suspended during the investigation and won’t be restarted until corrective actions have been implemented, McNeil said.

The recall of the Rolaids products announced Thursday is McNeil’s fourth recall announcement since mid-November. Other recalls during that time span include several liquid Tylenol Cold products, Children’s Benadryl Allergy FastMelt Tablets, Junior Strength Motrin Caplets and one lot of Rolaids Extra Strength Softchews.

The company’s spate of recalls began last January, when it said it called back certain lots of Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl Allergy UltraTab, Rolaids, Simply Sleep and St. Joseph products in response to consumer reports of an "unusual moldy, musty or mildew-like odor."

Other recalls followed, including Children’s Tylenol, Infants’ Tylenol and Motrin, Children’s Zyrtec, Zyrtec Itchy Eye Drops, a variety of liquid analgesics and cold/allergy remedies for infants and/or children (under the Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl banners), Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gels, Benadryl Allergy Ultratabs, Motrin IB, Children’s Tylenol Meltaways, various forms of Tylenol Extra Strength, Tylenol Day & Night, Tylenol PM and Tylenol 8-Hour.
