DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. plans to donate a total of $1.1 million to pharmacy schools across the country to help advance diversity.
The drug store chain said that more than 100 pharmacy school programs nationwide each will receive $10,000 for diversity initiatives.
Of the $10,000 donated to each accredited institution, $2,000 will be put toward a Walgreens Diversity Scholarship for a student who demonstrates a commitment to raising awareness for diversity and community outreach, according to Walgreens. The remaining $8,000 can be used to develop, implement and support programs that inspire more diversity among the student body, the company said.
Walgreens reported that since 2008, it has donated more than $3 million to support initiatives dedicated to promoting diversity. The company said its diversity donations have helped establish diversity councils, cultural competency workshops and training sessions, pharmacy camps and recruitment drives. Funds have also helped create patient care projects involving education and screenings among underserved patient populations.
"This is an exciting time for future pharmacists to see what a critical role they will play as patient needs grow and evolve," Kermit Crawford, president of pharmacy services at Walgreens, said in a statement. "From one-on-one patient consultations to immunizations, health and wellness education and community outreach, we want the next generation of talent to know how vital community pharmacy is to meeting today’s health care needs."
