BENTONVILLE, Ark. — As a major winter storm swept across large parts of the U.S. last week, Sam’s Club relied on its omnichannel capabilities to help members stay prepared, warm, and supplied, fulfilling about 1 million orders over six days through curbside pickup, scheduled delivery, and express delivery.
The retailer said demand for flexible fulfillment increased as power outages, icy roads, and school closures shifted household priorities from convenience to essentials like heat, food, and safety.
Surge in Preparedness Products
In the days before the storm, searches for generators on SamsClub.com surged more than 50 times, with members buying tens of thousands of units to prepare for possible outages. Nearly 40% of generator purchases were completed via curbside pickup or delivery, reducing in-store time during inclement weather.
Winter equipment sales also surged significantly. Online purchases of snow blowers, shovels, lanterns, and work lights increased by more than 2,800% year over year for the same period. Sam’s Club noted that the number of snow shovels sold during the storm would stretch roughly four miles if laid end to end.
Essentials and Comfort Foods Drive Demand
Members bought nearly 8 million pounds of ice melt that week, with about a quarter ordered online. Battery sales also rose, with over 80,000 units purchased online in one week, led by Member’s Mark AA multipacks.
Food staples and comfort items also played a key role. According to the retailer, members bought about 100,000 gallons of prepared soups, as families sought easy, warming meals during the cold and snow.
Online Searches Reflect Immediate Needs
Overall, winter-weather-related searches on SamsClub.com increased by more than 1,500% week over week, including items such as heaters, snow removal tools, salt, and power banks. Sam’s Club stated that the spike highlighted how digital tools and fulfillment options have become essential during extreme weather events.
Availability of curbside pickup and delivery varies by location and can be affected by weather and demand. Members are advised to follow local authority guidance and all product safety instructions.
