GREEN BAY, Wis. — Peter McMahon has been named chief executive officer of Shopko Stores Operating Co., replacing interim CEO Michael Bettiga.

A 30-year retail veteran, McMahon most recently was chief operating officer of Loblaw Cos., Canada’s leading supermarket operator. Before joining Loblaws, McMahon held senior management positions with Walmart International in Germany and Japan as well as with Tesco PLC, the largest retailer in the United Kingdom.

“We are fortunate to have such a successful and distinguished retail executive as Peter McMahon join the Shopko team,” said T. Scott King, senior managing director of Sun Capital Partners Inc., an affiliate of which owns Shopko.

“Peter is highly collaborative and has an outstanding record of driving results and solving complex business problems. His extensive supply chain experience will be a tremendous asset as Shopko continues to grow its Shopko Hometown store format, which serves smaller rural markets. Peter will be an excellent addition to lead the already-strong executive team at Shopko.”

Bettiga had served as interim CEO since October 2012, when W. Paul Jones, who was chairman, president and CEO, departed.

Before taking that role, Bettiga, who began his career at Shopko as a pharmacist in 1977, had served since 2009 as executive vice president and chief operating officer. Prior to 2009 he had held a variety of leadership roles, including senior vice president of retail health operations.
