CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — SpermCheck has expanded its retail distribution of its at-home male fertility test to more pharmacy retailers.

The company said the SpermCheck Fertility test is now available at CVS/pharmacy, Kinney Drugs and Target, along with Walgreens, Rite Aid and Meijer.

Priced at $39.99, the test also is sold online through the CVS/pharmacy, Walgreens, drugstore.com, Target, Walmart and Kmart websites. Boots pharmacies in the United Kingdom also carry the product.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration, SpermCheck Fertility determines with 98% accuracy if a man has normal or a low sperm count. Results are available in 10 minutes and can save the man a trip to the doctor’s office or lab to provide a semen sample, according to ContraVac Inc., d.b.a. SpermCheck

The test was developed by Dr. John Herr, director of the Center for Research in Contraceptive and Reproductive Health at the University of Virginia, based on the discovery of a patented protein found in the head of mature sperm. Herr remains involved with SpermCheck as chairman and chief scientific officer.

In stores, SpermCheck Fertility is placed on the family planning shelf next to home tests for female fertility, such as for pregnancy and ovulation. SpermCheck noted that it’s male fertility test is equalizing the options for couples as they seek to identify possible causes of infertility. The company reported that infertility affects nearly 7 million U.S. couples every year, but few people realized that up to 50% of conception issues are related to the male, primarily due to a low sperm count.

"Now there is something for the male half of the equation," stated Ray Lopez, chief executive officer of SpermCheck. "The tests use the same principles and are as simple to perform as a home pregnancy test. With the high incidence of infertility coupled with reports of declining sperm counts globally and a low incidence of male testing, couples may now obtain crucial information on male fertility status in privacy at home. SpermCheck Fertility is over 98% accurate, as reliable as a lab test, convenient and much less expensive than a visit to the doctor."

SpermCheck also manufactures SpermCheck Vasectomy, a home test for post-vasectomy semen screening.
