ATLANTA — Sprite is marking Cleveland’s first pro sports championship in 52 years with a limited-edition can spotlighting — who else — LeBron James, the Most Valuable Player in the finals for the 2016 NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Coca-Cola Co. beverage brand said the limited-edition 16-oz. can will be available at participating retailers in Ohio beginning later this week.
The commemorative Sprite can sports a bold yellow-on-green illustration of James and will be offered while supplies last.
In addition, Sprite has kicked off a social media campaign called #DapTheKing to help fans pay tribute to James, who’s popularly known as “The King.”
Inspired by the creative handshakes shared throughout the season between James and his teammates, Sprite is calling on fans to record videos of themselves performing their own handshakes to celebrate the Cavaliers’ historic win and post on social media using the hashtag #DapTheKing and tagging @Sprite.
“Sprite began working with LeBron in 2003 before he played his first professional game. Even as an 18-year-old, we could see how passionate he was about bringing ‘The Land’ a title,” stated Stuart Kronauge, senior vice president of brand marketing for Coca-Cola North America. “The Coca-Cola Co. has been lucky to follow him on this 13-year journey, so it’s an absolute joy to support his fans in celebrating the special moment.”
The #DapTheKing campaign also is supported by a digital video featuring viral basketball influencer Brandon “BdotAdot5” Armstrong.
Sprite is one of Coca-Cola Co.’s 20 billion-dollar brands, which also include Diet Coke, Coca-Cola Zero, Fanta, Dasani, vitaminwater, Powerade, Minute Maid, Simply, Del Valle, Georgia and Gold Peak, among others.
