MINNEAPOLIS — Steve Jungmann has been hired as executive vice president of merchandising at food and drug retailer Supervalu Inc.

Jungmann fills the vacancy left by Duncan Mac Naughton, who resigned from Supervalu in late September and joined Wal-Mart Canada as chief marketing officer. In the interim, Supervalu’s merchandising and marketing functions had reported to president and chief executive officer Craig Herkert.

Plans call for Jungmann to join Supervalu early next month. In his new role, he will lead all of the company’s merchandising activities for its retail banners, excluding Save-A-Lot but including the Own Brands private-label program. He will report to Herkert.

"Steve is the right person to lead Supervalu’s merchandising teams as we look to grow top-line sales," Herkert said in a statement. "His track record of understanding and leveraging consumer behavior will be invaluable as we continue our focus on becoming ‘America’s Neighborhood Grocer,’ and I’m excited to have him join our team."

Jungmann, 47, has nearly 25 years of consumer sales and marketing experience, most recently serving as senior vice president of consumer sales and marketing at the Solo Cup Co. in Highland Park, Ill., according to Supervalu.

Before joining Solo in 2007, he spent one year at Spectrum Brands, a global consumer packaged goods company, as senior vice president of sales. And prior to that, he spent 20 years at Kraft Foods, where he held a number of sales, corporate planning and strategy roles across multiple geographies. His most recent role with Kraft was vice president of category sales, Supervalu said.
