BELLEVUE, Wash. — Users of XyliMelts for Dry Mouth are sleeping better thanks to the product’s delivery mechanism, according to a study done on behalf of manufacturer OraHealth.
The company said Monday that respondents in the telephone survey, conducted by Oral Care Research Associates, experienced improved sleep quality by an average of 100% by using XyliMelts for Dry Mouth.
XyliMelts employs an all-natural, oral adhering disc that slowly releases an effective amount of xylitol (500 mg) and oral lubricant to relieve dry mouth (xerostomia) day and night, as well as reduce tooth decay.
OraHealth noted that XyliMelts is the only remedy for dry mouth that effectively addresses the sleep disruption and tooth decay caused by dry mouth.
The survey findings showed that the average sleep quality rating of respondents before using XyliMelts was 2 and improved to 4 after using the product at night while sleeping, as rated on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the worst and 5 the best quality of sleep. Other survey findings showed that 92% of the respondents used XyliMelts at night while sleeping.
For those whose sleep is disturbed by dry mouth, the patented oral adhering disc technology of XyliMelts allows them to discretely stick to the outside of a molar or adjoining gums. XyliMelts slowly release an effective level of xylitol into saliva while sleeping, when saliva flow is lowest and the xylitol will stay in the mouth longest before being swallowed.
OraHealth added that XyliMelts used while sleeping is the most effective delivery per gram of xylitol for caries control.
"The results of this survey showing improved sleep quality support the findings of our earlier clinical study, which demonstrated that use of XyliMelts slow-release adhering discs while sleeping significantly improved perceived oral wetness upon awakening in the morning," stated Jeff Burgess, D.D.S., M.S.D., director of Oral Care Research Associates.
Among other benefits, XyliMelts stimulate saliva; coat, moisturize and lubricate; and freshen breath, according to OraHealth, which added that the product also can be used with CPAP machines.
XyliMelts are currently available online and at Rite Aid pharmacies.
