NEW YORK — Target announced plans to open a new small-format store in Manhattan located near Columbus Circle at 61st St. and Broadway. Projected to open in 2019, the Columbus Circle store will be Target’s 28 open or planned store in New York City – a priority growth market for the company. Target also plans to open its Kips Bay, Upper East Side and Staten Island stores in 2019.
Nationwide, Target is reaching new guests by opening small-format stores in urban areas, dense suburban neighborhoods and near college campuses – places where a full-size Target store may not fit. These stores offer a shopping experience and assortment that is tailored to meet the needs of area guests.

“We’re thrilled to continue growing our footprint throughout New York City with small-format stores that provide local families, commuters and visitors with a convenient, one-stop shopping experience. Located in a premier shopping hub of Manhattan, this store will serve Midtown West and Upper West Side guests, as well as meet the on-the-go needs of Central Park visitors and Columbus Circle shoppers,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target.
Target has signed a lease with AvalonBay Communities, Inc. for the approximately 34,000-square-foot store, which will offer locals and visitors a quick-trip shopping option with:
- A food and beverage selection for quick or fill-in trips, including fresh produce, grab-and-go options, snacks and meal solutions
- Essentials and beauty products
- Apparel and accessories for men and women
- Home décor and essentials
- Order Pickup – with more than 95 percent of online orders ready for pick up within an hour
This store will hire approximately 160 team members to help deliver a great shopping experience. Target values the individuals who come together as a team to serve guests in the community, and provides team members with opportunities to build and develop skills for their careers. Target also offers various education benefits, such as tuition and GED reimbursement, to support team members’ continuous learning. This investment in the team will allow Target to continue to recruit and retain strong team members and provide an elevated experience for its guests.
“We are thrilled to have Target in the project. The store will be a great amenity for our residents at 1865 Broadway. Our building offered Target unique access to day-trippers, tourists and one of the most affluent demographics in the country. In addition, the building is just one block from The Shops at Columbus Circle, one of the highest performing malls in the country,” said Martin Piazzola, senior vice president, AvalonBay Communities, Inc.
