MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy plans to add as many as 20 stores over the next three years as the drug chain expands beyond Florida’s Miami-Dade County.
The strategy includes five new drug stores this year, seven new outlets in 2011 and eight new units in 2013. This year, the first new store will be in North Miami. The 14,000-square-foot location will be the chain’s 29th store.
“Expanding into North Miami is part of our three-year growth plan, which includes adding new store locations and remodeling existing locations,” comments chief executive officer Steve Kaczynski.
“Being in North Miami will allow us to reach out to introduce our successful community pharmacy and discount model to additional ethnic groups and expand our loyal customer base,” Kaczynski says. Additional stores in 2011 will be located in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
Also starting this year, Navarro aims to remodel existing stores as well as include such new service offerings as pediatric windows for prescriptions, new signage by disease state and the addition of nutritional specialists.
In 2012 and 2013 Navarro’s objective is to enter Palm Beach County as well as additional areas in Florida — including possibly Orlando and southwestern Florida.
Although these counties don’t have a huge Hispanic population like Miami-Dade, they have underserved Hispanic markets, according to Kaczynski. “The products we have will be unique to the majority of Hispanics in that area,” he says. “We want to be all things to all Hispanics.”
The typical Navarro store occupies 17,500 square feet, although there is flexibility in space, notes Kaczynski. On average, the stores employ 40 to 60 people each.
