MORRIS PLAINS, N.J. — McNeil PPC’s Visine eye care brand has introduced Visine Summer Spectrum Relief, billed as "the first and only eye drop targeted for summertime eye irritation and redness."

The company said Wednesday that Visine Summer Spectrum Relief is being launched nationwide this month exclusively at CVS pharmacies in the sun care aisle.

According to Visine, about 60% of Americans have gone swimming in the past year, and many report having burning, irritated and/or red eyes. Chlorine and the high levels of salt in seawater are often the cause. Goggles can help swimmers but don’t protect against dryness, flushing with water can cool eyes yet may leave them dry and, if not using a sterile solution, may lead to further irritation and redness, the company said. What’s more, the summertime sun and wind can leave eyes feeling dry and uncomfortable.

Visine Summer Spectrum Relief features a trio of lubricants and an eye redness reliever that’s designed to "get the red out" in seconds, according to Visine. The drops can be used at the first sign of irritation, "so your eyes won’t slow you down when you’re riding waves, doing laps, playing beach volleyball or just strolling the shore and drinking in the sun," the company said.

Available in a 0.5-ounce size for $3.99, Visine Summer Spectrum Relief can be used by adults and children age 6 years and older.
