DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has acquired prescription files from SpecialtyScripts LLC, a unit of Cardinal Health Inc.

The drug store chain said the acquisition will enable Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy to scale the operations of its current locations. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Fall River, Mass.-based SpecialtyScripts, founded in 2002, specializes in providing specialty pharmacy services for chronic illnesses and complex diseases, such as hepatitis C, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and oral oncology.

"We’re excited about our acquisition of SpecialtyScripts and see it as an opportunity to grow our specialty pharmacy business through additional preferred payor agreements," Michael Nameth, executive vice president at Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy and divisional vice president at Walgreen Co., said in a statement. "It’s a good fit for us because SpecialtyScripts has a similar client base, and we share a commitment to providing patients and customers with quality care and exceptional service."

Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy is a national provider of injectable and biopharmaceutical medications, serving patients living with complex, chronic health and medical conditions. The subsidiary provides personalized care and services through dedicated fulfillment centers nationwide and electronically linked Walgreens pharmacies, including locations in academic medical centers, community hospitals and physician office buildings, according to the company. It also helps patients in obtaining medications, coordinates insurance benefits, and provides individualized therapy management and clinical support.

Announced Wednesday, the deal comes just days after Walgreens unveiled a realignment of its health care businesses. The company said the reorganization will enable it to offer integrated pharmacy, health and wellness solutions to payer clients through a unified sales team.
