DEERFIELD, Ill. — Cheryl Pegus, chief medical officer of Walgreen Co. is slated to present next week at the 11th annual Population Health and Care Coordination Colloquium in Philadelphia.
Walgreens said Monday that at the March 15 event, Pegus will be a speaker in a session titled, "Impact and Value of Pharmacist Interventions in Different Settings." The discussion will examine the expanding role of pharmacists in improving clinical outcomes through interventions at community pharmacies and employer work-site health clinics.
Amid a shortage of primary care providers and imminent changes to the delivery of health care services under health care reform, increased use of other types of health care providers, such as pharmacists, will play a pivotal role in efforts to deliver greater access, improve patient outcomes and reduce costs, according to Walgreens.
At the discussion session, attendees will learn how pharmacist interventions are driving improved medication adherence and hear about significant programs and clinical studies that support the need for the expansion of these services, Walgreens said.
Pegus, named chief medical officer at Walgreens in May, and has more than 18 years of clinical practice and industry experience. Previously, she was general manager and chief medical officer for SymCare Personalized Health Solutions Inc.
Late last week, Walgreens announced that it has joined the Care Continuum Alliance, a global trade group aimed at bringing together all stakeholders in health care to help improve population health.
"Together, our pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, home care nurses and other health care professionals provide guidance and solutions to improve disease prevention, adherence to medications and chronic disease management for tens of millions of patients each year," Pegus commented about Walgreens’ membershi in the alliance.
