DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens is strengthening its pharmacy operations with the opening of a new micro-fulfillment center (MFC) in Allentown, Pennsylvania, a move aimed at increasing efficiency, supporting pharmacists and improving patient care across the region.
The new facility will serve nearly 650 Walgreens stores, including 55 locations in Pennsylvania, by automating the dispensing of prescription medications. By shifting routine fulfillment activities away from individual stores, the company said pharmacy teams can spend more time focused on patient interactions, medication counseling and other clinical services.
The Allentown center marks Walgreens' 15th micro-fulfillment facility nationwide. Collectively, the company's MFC network now supports more than 5,500 stores and processes roughly 18 million prescriptions each month.
Walgreens expects the Allentown facility alone to handle nearly 29 million prescriptions annually, making it a key component of the company's broader pharmacy modernization strategy.

“The opening of our Allentown micro-fulfillment center represents another significant step in transforming how we deliver pharmacy care. Our network of 15 MFCs now supports roughly 5,500 stores across the country, with MFC-serviced stores managing more than 40 percent of our total prescription volume," said Rick Gates, chief pharmacy and enterprise external affairs officer at Walgreens. "By shifting routine prescription fulfillment to these centers, we’re creating more capacity for our pharmacists to focus on what matters most: supporting patients, providing personalized care and expanding access to clinical services in the communities we serve,” he added.
Micro-fulfillment centers use automation and advanced technology to centralize prescription processing before medications are delivered to retail pharmacies for pickup. The model is designed to improve accuracy, streamline workflows and help pharmacies manage growing prescription volumes more efficiently.
Walgreens said the expansion reflects its ongoing commitment to transforming community pharmacy operations as patient expectations evolve and demand for healthcare services continues to grow. By reducing administrative and dispensing burdens on store-level teams, the company aims to create more time for pharmacists to provide personalized care and health services in their communities.
The opening of the Allentown facility also reinforces Walgreens' investment in technology-driven solutions intended to enhance both the patient experience and pharmacy workforce efficiency.
