DEERFIELD, Ill. — In recognition of World Blindness Awareness Month, Walgreens has introduced Scan Rx, a digital accessibility tool that provides audio access to prescription information for patients who are blind, visually impaired or prefer spoken medication instructions.
Now available at all Walgreens pharmacy locations, Scan Rx allows patients to access prescription details by scanning a QR code on their prescription materials or visiting Walgreens Scan Rx. The service reads key prescription information aloud, including the patient's name, medication name, dosage and directions. It also offers access to Medication Guides, prescription leaflets and other educational materials when available.
Walgreens said the free service was originally developed to support individuals with vision loss but is available to anyone who may benefit from audio access to medication information. Scan Rx is offered in both English and Spanish and does not require users to download an app or enroll in a program.
The launch builds on Walgreens' existing efforts to improve prescription accessibility. Current offerings include large-print prescription labels, magnified patient information sheets and the Walgreens Talking Pill Reminder, an audio-enabled device that attaches to prescription bottles and helps patients manage medication schedules.
According to Walgreens, Scan Rx is designed to help patients better understand their medications, improve access to important health information and support greater independence in managing their care.
