SAN FRANCISCO — Walgreens drug stores have become pickup locations for online wine orders via Wine.com.
Wine.com Inc. said Tuesday that it has tripled its number of pickup locations to more than 10,000 sites nationwide — including almost 1,000 in California and over 500 in New York, where the e-tailer offers a bigger selection of wine than any other store.
With the expanded service, Wine.com pickup sites now include FedEx Office and Walgreens locations as well as Duane Reade, Safeway, Shaw’s, Jewel-Osco, Albertsons and Fred Meyer stores, among others.
The Wine.com local pickup service provides a convenient means of ordering wine online and having it delivered, since wine requires a signature from someone at least age 21 upon delivery and many people spend most of their day out of the house, the company noted.
The online wine retailer said it offers date-specific delivery and local pickup options, and most pickup locations are open nights and weekends, with many having 24-hour operation. Customer select the nearest local pickup sites during the Wine.com checkout process.
Wine.com said customer use of the local pickup service has been strong, with more than 500k,000 bottles delivered to date.
“Customers love our massive selection, deep wine content, live chat sommeliers and free shipping membership,” Wine.com chief executive officer Rich Bergsund said in a statement. “Now we’ll deliver to a location near you for pickup on your schedule — no more waiting to sign for your wine delivery. I use Wine.com local pickup for all my wine deliveries.”
Billing itself as the world’s largest wine store, Wine.com offers live chat wine experts available 7 days a week on its website and mobile site. The recently launched Wine.com iOS app enables users to scan, rate and buy wines on the go. The company said it delivers in one to two days to most addresses via its multiple fulfillment centers. Its StewardShip program provides unlimited wine delivery and exclusive access to new releases for $49 a year.
