Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy earns first Gene and Cell Services accreditation

Accreditations were granted by the Accreditation Commission for Healthcare (ACHC) for Gene and Cell Services and Walgreens Central Specialty Pharmacy.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy has earned its first Gene and Cell Services accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), marking a milestone in its specialty care offerings.

In addition, Walgreens Central Specialty Pharmacy received its first accreditations for infusion nursing services (non-Medicare certified) and infusion pharmacy services (without sterile compounding). The location also achieved reaccreditation in ACHC Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation and Distinctions for oncology, rare diseases and orphan drugs.

“Evolving the pharmacy industry has been in our DNA since our doors first opened in 1901. This first accreditation and our work in gene and cell therapies is another piece of that puzzle,” said Tracey James, RPh, chief operating officer, Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy.

Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy noted that accreditation validates compliance with national specialty pharmacy standards and reinforces its commitment to quality patient care. The ACHC accreditations are effective from Sept. 16, 2025, through Sept. 15, 2028.

Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy provides services and medications for patients with rare, complex and chronic diseases, including cancer, cystic fibrosis and Crohn’s disease. Its pharmacists are specially trained to handle medications with unique storage, temperature and handling requirements, and to offer adherence support, affordability solutions and ongoing clinical monitoring.
