DEERFIELD, Ill. – Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy has received full accreditation from URAC under the Specialty Pharmacy, version 5.0 program. This URAC accreditation is effective from January 1, 2026, through January 1, 2029. URAC is a leading independent healthcare accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry.
“URAC accreditations reflect our commitment to ensuring patients have access to the highest standards of specialty care,” said Rina Shah, senior vice president, Enterprise Specialty Pharmacy, Walgreens. “Our No. 1 goal is supporting patients with complex and chronic conditions consistent care that meets them where they are and how they want to receive care.”
She said Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy is proud to work with URAC for these accreditations as they demonstrate the company’s commitment to providing patients with quality care. "Accreditation is key to the success of specialty pharmacies as it is a process through which healthcare organizations demonstrate compliance with national specialty pharmacy standards."
Hybrid pharmacy postion expansion
In other company news, Walgreens announced that it is expanding its Hybrid Pharmacist role, a staffing model designed to relieve workforce strain, enhance patient care, and increase clinical capacity by combining in‑store practice with centralized clinical and fulfillment support.
Created in response to nationwide pharmacist shortages, rising burnout, and growing demand for clinical services, the role allows pharmacists to split their time between community‑based duties and centralized settings such as regional support centers, micro‑fulfillment hubs, and, in some states, approved work‑from‑home operations.
Early outcomes show improved work–life balance, reduced operational bottlenecks, and better integration across care settings, as centralized teams support prescription verification, clinical consultations, and provider communications—freeing on‑site pharmacists to focus more on direct patient care.
The Hybrid Pharmacist role is now active in Arkansas, Missouri, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Tennessee, with additional expansion expected as regulatory conditions evolve.
