Walgreens takes flu prevention campaign to New York with Jordyn Woods partnership

Chain puts prevention at center court as flu activity increases earlier this season.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens brought its flu prevention campaign to New York City, launching a public activation in Herald Square aimed at encouraging consumers to get vaccinated before flu activity intensifies across the country.

The “Don’t Get Benched by the Flu” event ran November 2nd and featured a larger-than-life basketball-themed bench installation ahead of evening games involving New York’s hometown basketball teams. Visitors were able take photos, shoot hoops, receive giveaways and schedule a flu vaccination through Walgreens.

To help spread the message, Walgreens has teamed up with entrepreneur and social media personality Jordyn Woods, who is closely associated with New York basketball culture.

“This season of life means a lot of busy nights and moments I don’t want to miss, so getting my flu shot is one way I’m staying prepared,” Woods said. “Whether it’s a big game, time with family or just keeping up with everyday life, no one wants to get benched by the flu.”

The campaign comes as Walgreens reports signs of an earlier start to the 2026-27 flu season. According to the retailer’s flu tracking data, cases are rising sooner than in recent years, and for the week ending Oct. 24, Walgreens dispensed four times more flu antiviral prescriptions than during the same period last year.

Health officials recommend getting vaccinated before flu activity peaks because it can take up to two weeks after vaccination for the body to develop protective antibodies.

“Flu season is off to an earlier start, and our data is showing why it’s important not to wait to get vaccinated,” said Rick Gates, chief pharmacy and enterprise external affairs officer at Walgreens. “Whether you’re cheering on your favorite team, traveling for the holidays or gathering with family, a flu shot is one of the best ways to help protect your health and avoid missing the moments that matter.”

Walgreens offers a range of flu vaccine options, including standard-dose shots, higher-dose vaccines recommended for adults 65 and older, and a new mRNA flu vaccine available at select locations. Consumers can walk into participating pharmacies or schedule appointments online through Walgreens Vaccine Scheduling.

The retailer said the campaign is designed to remind consumers that early vaccination can help reduce the risk of illness and keep them from missing work, travel, sporting events and family gatherings during the busy holiday season.
