MESQUITE, Texas — Walmart is continuing its growth across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex with plans to open a new Neighborhood Market on the eastern side of Mesquite, furthering the retail giant’s push into smaller-format stores tailored to local communities.
Construction on the new store, located at 3100 E. Cartwright Road, is scheduled to begin this fall, with completion expected by late summer 2026, according to a Walmart spokesperson, Kelsey Bohl, who spoke to The Dallas Morning News.
Neighborhood Markets are Walmart’s more compact alternative to its traditional Supercenters. While smaller in footprint, the stores still carry essential grocery items and household goods aimed at serving everyday needs.
“By combining a smaller store format with a carefully curated assortment, these stores are designed to meet the unique needs of each neighborhood they serve,” Bohl said.
Walmart has already launched similar stores in cities such as Plano, Dallas, and Flower Mound. Additionally, there is an existing Neighborhood Market located approximately six miles northwest of the new Mesquite location, near Town East Mall.
The move is part of a broader investment strategy in North Texas, where Walmart also plans to open new Supercenters in Frisco, Melissa, and Celina over the next year. “We’re committed to meeting the evolving needs of our customers, and Mesquite represents a dynamic, expanding community,” Bohl said.
Walmart’s expansion comes as competition in the grocery and general retail space intensifies. H-E-B recently announced a new store in North Texas, while other players, such as Kroger and Tom Thumb, are reevaluating their store footprints—closing some locations while targeting growth in select areas.
The new Mesquite Neighborhood Market reinforces Walmart’s confidence in the region’s population growth and shifting consumer needs.
