BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart is adding a new use for its digital shelf labels, allowing customers to activate shelf-level LED lights through the Walmart app to help locate specific products in stores.
The new Shop to Light feature connects a shopper’s product search with the LED built into the corresponding digital shelf label. When activated, the light flashes at the product’s shelf location, helping customers distinguish the item they want among similar brands, sizes and varieties.
The feature expands on technology Walmart already uses to assist store associates. Stock to Light directs employees to the correct shelf location when stocking merchandise, while Pick to Light helps associates identify specific products when fulfilling online pickup and delivery orders.
Walmart said the three functions use the LED technology already incorporated into its digital shelf labels, eliminating the need for separate in-store hardware.
The retailer has been replacing traditional paper shelf tags with digital labels, which allow approved price changes to be displayed more efficiently and help keep shelf and checkout prices consistent.
Walmart stressed that the labels do not set or automatically change prices. Prices are determined centrally, with associates reviewing approved changes before they are displayed.
The company also said its digital shelf labels do not collect customer information. The labels operate on a closed system, contain no cameras or microphones and cannot identify customers or track their shopping behavior.
