NEW YORK — Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Akorn Inc. have shipped vancomycin hydrochloride capsules, an antibiotic used to treat infections of the intestines that cause colitis.
The companies said Tuesday that their products, offered in strengths of 125 mg and 250 mg, are generic versions of ViroPharma Inc.’s Vancocin.
According to Watson and Acorn, Vancocin is indicated for the treatment of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) and enterocolitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains.
Vancocin capsules had U.S. sales of $332 million for the 12 months ended Feb. 29, according to IMS Health figures cited by Watson.
