SARASOTA, Fla. — WoundSeal, a topical powder designed to stop bleeding instantly for the more than 50 million seniors on blood thinners, is now available over the counter.
BioLife LLC, the maker of WoundSeal, said Tuesday that the product is available nationally in the first aid section at Walgreens and CVS/pharmacy drug stores, and online at WoundSeal.com, for a suggested retail price of $6.99.
WoundSeal’s OTC launch coincides with the federal government’s Million Hearts Campaign, which aims to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over five years, according to BioLife. The company said WoundSeal can assist the campaign by helping patients stay compliant with their life-saving blood thinning medications by reducing one of the most significant side effects: external bleeding.
Many patients stop taking blood thinning medications because minor wounds can bleed for hours or even days, disrupting daily life, and common products used to stop bleeding, such as gauze and bandages, often don’t work, BioLife explained.
WoundSeal has been a trusted solution for years in leading hospitals such as The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Mayo Clinic and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the company noted. The product was invented by accident when its creator, Dr. James Patterson, was testing potassium iron oxyacid salt for water purification technology. He cut his hand and noticed that when the powder mixed with his blood, it formed an instant scab that stopped the bleeding.
