ABBOTT PARK, Ill. — Abbott next month plans to ship RevitaLens Ocutec, a next-generation multipurpose disinfecting solution for silicone hydrogel and conventional soft contact lenses.
The company said Wednesday that RevitaLens Ocutec delivers high-quality disinfection and comfort for the user, with the convenience of a single bottle. The solution was developed in cooperation with world-class silicone hydrogel, microbiology and chemistry experts and with input from more than 600 eyecare professionals.
"This advanced, next-generation solution establishes a new standard of disinfecting technology for contact lens wearers," commented Jim Mazzo, senior vice president of Abbott Medical Optics. "Proper contact lens care, including a rub and rinse regimen using RevitaLens Ocutec, will help patients achieve clean and comfortable lenses while enhancing overall lens-wearing satisfaction."
Abbott reported that it’s estimated that there are 125 million contact lens wearers worldwide. Multipurpose solutions represent the majority of systems used for the care of soft contact lenses, and these comprise a single solution for the rinsing, cleaning, disinfection and storage of lenses and are typically composed of a preservative, buffer system and other agents to aid in lens cleaning and comfort.
Key characteristics of RevitaLens Ocutec, the company said, include high microorganism kill rates, removal of proteins from the lens surface, effective elimination of Acanthamoeba and Fusarium, reduction of corneal staining, and less risk of eye complications.
"It is gratifying to see the contact lens solution industry developing new products, such as RevitaLens Ocutec, that enhance patient safety by providing the delicate balance of superior disinfection, comfort and convenience," said Dr. Thomas Quinn, an optometrist in Athens, Ohio, in a statement provided by Abbott.
The company said it plans to begin retail shipment of RevitaLens Ocutec in the United States in October and that the product also has CE Mark approval in Europe.
