SEATTLE — Amazon is making one of its largest moves yet in the U.S. grocery market, adding thousands of fresh perishable grocery items to its Same-Day Delivery service. Customers in more than 1,000 cities and towns can now have fresh produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods delivered within hours, alongside millions of non-grocery products available on Amazon.com. The company plans to expand this capability to over 2,300 cities and towns across the country by the end of 2025, with additional growth expected in 2026.

The expansion enables Prime members to purchase fresh groceries and everyday essentials in a single transaction, with all items delivered together. Orders over $25 in most cities qualify for free Same-Day Delivery for Prime members, while smaller orders incur a $2.99 fee. Non-Prime customers can also access the service for $12.99 per order.

To maintain quality, Amazon is using its specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network. Fresh items undergo a six-point quality inspection before leaving the facility, and temperature-sensitive products are shipped in insulated, recyclable bags—similar to those used for Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market deliveries—to ensure they arrive in optimal condition.

The move builds on Amazon’s growing grocery business, which generated more than $100 billion in sales of groceries and household essentials in 2024. Popular items such as strawberries, Honeycrisp apples, limes, and avocados are already among the top sellers in Same-Day Delivery grocery orders.

Amazon’s expanded grocery offering complements its existing services from Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and local specialty retailers, reinforcing its strategy to make grocery shopping faster, more convenient, and more integrated with the company’s broader retail ecosystem. Customers can now order everything from milk and oranges to novels and home improvement tools in a single cart, with delivery to their doorstep in just hours.
