Walgreens set to launch shopper loyalty program

Walgreen Co. plans to roll out its long-awaited customer loyalty program this month and today began enabling shoppers to enroll online. Walgreens said Thursday that the program, called Balance Rewards, has the potential to be the nation’s largest consumer loyalty plan.

Comp-store sales decline at Walgreens

Walgreen Co. reported a decrease in comparable-store sales for August as introductions of lower-priced generic drugs pared pharmacy revenue. Walgreens said Thursday that same-store sales fell 8.2% in August, reflecting a negative impact of 5.1 percentage points from generic drug introductions.

Sam’s Club to hold diabetes screenings

Next month, Sam’s Club pharmacy locations plan to provide free diabetes and vision screenings for members and the public. The Walmart warehouse club chain said Thursday that the diabetes checkups will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
