SEATTLE — Bartell Drugs plans to open its 59th store this summer in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood.
The Puget Sound-area drug chain said Wednesday that the 11,600-square-foot store, slated to open in mid-August, will include a large Urban Market section, a full-service pharmacy and over-the-counter products, a Sweets & Snacks area, Kodak Photo Kiosks, its Fresh Beauty concept in the cosmetics section, and vitamins.
In addition, the store will bring expanded offerings of organic and locally produced products as well as an expanded selection of pet supplies.
Located near the corner of Terry and Mercer streets, the new store marks a return of Bartell Drugs to the neighborhood, the company noted.
In 1914, founder George Bartell Sr. established Bartell Drugs’ headquarters nearby on Boren Avenue, and it eventually included a candy factory and a photo processing lab. The location served as the company’s headquarters until 1985.
The new store will serve a thriving neighborhood with major employers, urban residences, nearby medical centers, restaurants and shopping, the retailer added.
"This is an exciting urban location and our goal is to provide our mix of services and product offerings tailored to workers and residents in the neighborhood," chairman and chief executive officer George Bartell said in a statement.
Bartell Drugs stores are located in Washington’s King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. The family-owned chain unveiled its next-generation retail concept in September 2011 at a 15,475-square-foot remodeled store in Seattle’s Roosevelt Square.
And last fall, the company relocated its headquarters to a corporate center in West Seattle from the Georgetown industrial area south of downtown Seattle.
