TORONTO — Bescot Healthcare Canada’s Cast Comfort, a spray that alleviates discomfort that may arise beneath a cast, is now being carried by Shoppers Home Health Care, a retail unit of Shoppers Drug Mart Corp.
Bescot said Monday that Shoppers Home Health Care joins Quebec retail pharmacy chains Uniprix, Unipharm, Proxim, Proximed, Brunet, Clini Plus and Familiprix in offering Cast Comfort.
An aerosol spray, Cast Comfort is designed to cool the itch that can occur under a plaster or fiberglass cast or splint, as well as stops odor that can arise from the buildup of moisture.
Many patients suffering from the itch — usually in the most inaccessible place under the cast — often would resort to pouring water down between the skin and waterproof cast and then try to dry the skin with a hair dryer, according to Bescot. Others even would use a ruler or knitting needle in an attempt to get relief from the itch, the company said.
The Cast Comfort spray contains specially formulated ingredients to provide comfort: medical-grade alcohol to cool the itch immediately, talc to soothe the skin, a special drying agent to help control moisture, and sodium bicarbonate and a light fragrance to absorb and eliminate odor.
Bescot said Cast Comfort is located on store shelves next to various cast covers that can help prevent a cast or splint from getting wet when taking a bath or shower.
