WASHINGTON – The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) released results of a new survey today, which found that Americans’ use of dietary supplements as a valued tool to maintain and support overall health and wellness remains high, while three-quarters of those polled say regulatory reform for dietary supplements is needed.
Key findings include:
Dietary supplements are a mainstream part of registered voters’ health and wellness routines, and access is valued:
- 92% of voters agree supplements have positively impacted their overall health, wellness and quality of life.
- 83% of voters use dietary supplements to support their wellness needs.
- 82% of voters say it is important for both them and their families to have convenient access to dietary supplements.
While most consumers trust dietary supplements are safe, there is still room to strengthen further confidence in their safety and awareness of how they are regulated:
- 88% of voters are “confident” in supplement safety, but only 44% of those respondents are “very” confident.
- 48% believe dietary supplements are regulated by the U.S. government, with most consumers incorrectly assuming they are regulated the same as prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
Voters overwhelmingly support modernizing supplement regulations:
- A majority of voters agree “current regulations should be updated and strengthened to protect consumers.”
- 75% of voters support federal legislation to modernize the regulatory framework for dietary supplements [the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994].
“This survey reinforces what we've long known: Americans rely on dietary supplements as part of their daily health routine—and they expect a strong regulatory system to ensure the safety and quality of the products they consume,” said CHPA President and CEO Scott Melville. “It’s time to update DSHEA to further safeguard consumers from bad actors, facilitate industry innovation, and bring greater transparency to this fast-growing category of consumer healthcare products.”
Survey Methodology: The survey was conducted by Peak Insights via online interviews from Feb. 19 – 20, 2025. Peak Insights conducted 1,169 interviews among a representative sample of USA voters nationwide; the voters were screened from a consumer panel.
