SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The board of trustees of the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) has voted to endorse the California Cancer Research Act.
The act, which will appear as Proposition 29 on the June 5 presidential primary election ballot, would impose an additional 5-cent tax on each cigarette distributed ($1 per pack) and an equivalent tax hike on other tobacco products to fund cancer research and other purposes.
"The CPhA Board of Trustees carefully reviewed and discussed the elements of the proposition and felt that as a health care association representing health care providers, supporting the measure was the right thing to do" CPhA chief executive officer Jon Roth said in a statement. "This endorsement is consistent with CPhA policy regarding tobacco use as well as pharmacist’s leadership role in promoting health policy in California."
CPhA said that by endorsing the measure, it joins the Marin Pharmacists Association, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association in California, Live Strong Foundation, University of California, California Medical Association and California Hospital Association, among other organizations, in support of Proposition 29.
