CINCINNATI — Dental health ranks in the top three medical concerns among those age 50 and older, according to a survey by Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health For Life and AARP.

The Procter & Gamble oral care brands said Tuesday that 75% of respondents in the poll, conducted by AARP, agreed that "compared to my overall health concerns, my dental and oral health care is very important."

The more than 500 consumers surveyed were between the ages of 48 and 66, a group identified as "Boomer," and 67 and older, a group designated as "Mature."

Results showed that older adults are concerned with their oral health and are aware of the importance of maintaining it, as 74% of respondents indicated that they visited a dentist or dental professional for treatment at least twice a year. These consumers also recognize that aging may affect their oral health and as a preventive measure they are incorporating healthy habits, such as visiting the dentist regularly, according to the study. Of those polled, 78% said they go to a dentist or dental professional for treatment the same or more versus 10 years ago.

Still, many older adults are lax in daily oral hygiene, particularly in not grasping the importance of maintaining a full oral care routine, the survey found. Of respondents, 60% don’t use mouthwash daily, 47% don’t floss daily and 34% brush just once a day.

Crest and Oral-B noted that the survey findings indicate there are opportunities to help educate and improve the oral health of this age group.

"As adults age, it is critical that they continue to maintain a rigorous oral hygiene regimen," stated Ann Ross, RDH, Mobile Dentistry of Arizona. "This should include regular professional dental cleanings and using products that address their oral health needs."
