WOONSOCKET, R.I. — Troy Brennan, executive vice president and chief medical officer at CVS Caremark Corp., has been named to the National Commission on Physician Payment Reform.
CVS said Monday that the independent commission, sponsored by the Society of General Internal Medicine, will examine how physicians are paid and how pay incentives are linked to patient care.
The new panel includes doctors and representatives from health care, insurance and a state health department, as well as health policy leaders and a consumer representative. According to CVS, commission members will offer a range of perspectives to provide a road map of cost-conscious payment changes that will help better control health care spending while at optimizing patient care.
Plans call for the commission to meet over the course of one year and issue recommendations in early 2013. The commission is funded in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the California Healthcare Foundation and the Sergei Zlinkoff Fund for Medical Education and Research.
Before joining CVS Caremark in 2008, Brennan served as chief medical officer for Aetna Inc. and as president and chief executive officer of Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization in Boston. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and has served on the faculties of Harvard Medical School, Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Public Health.
