CVS Pharmacy debuts aluminum bottles for O-T-C store brand products

Chain rolls out new packaging for store-brand allergy and pain relief products as retailers rethink sustainability in health care aisles

CVS Pharmacy is introducing aluminum bottles for its store-brand over-the-counter medications, marking the first time a major pharmacy chain has brought such packaging to its private-label health products at national scale.

The rollout begins with value-sized CVS brand allergy and pain relief products — store equivalents of name brands including Zyrtec, Claritin, Allegra, Benadryl, Advil, and Tylenol. Prices will remain unchanged from the previous plastic packaging.

The move positions CVS within a broader retail push to reduce single-use plastic in consumer goods, an area where health and wellness products have historically lagged behind food and beverage categories. Aluminum is widely considered more recyclable than most plastics, and the material can be processed through conventional curbside programs in most U.S. markets.

"This isn't a visual rebrand," the company emphasized in describing the initiative. CVS framed the change as a substantive materials shift for customers who want to reduce their plastic footprint without switching away from familiar store-brand formulas or paying more.

The announcement follows a packaging refresh CVS undertook last year for its broader OTC health and wellness line, which was aimed at making it easier for shoppers to locate products on the shelf. The aluminum bottle initiative extends that effort into the underlying materials, signaling that the company sees packaging as a lever for both sustainability and differentiated retail experience.

The premium look and feel of aluminum — long associated with high-end consumer and beverage products — also reflects an effort to elevate the perception of store-brand health products, a category that major chains have invested heavily in as margins on name-brand goods tighten.
