CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Tom Ryan, chairman and chief executive officer of CVS Caremark Corp., is slated to speak along with the heads of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration at a health care forum being held early next year by the University of Miami.
The university said Ryan; Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of Health and Human Services; and Margaret Hamburg, commissioner of the FDA, will be featured speakers at a Global Business Forum titled "The Business of Health Care: Defining the Future" scheduled for Jan. 12 to 14, 2011.
Other featured speakers at the event will include university president Donna Shalala, a former HHS secretary; Jeffrey Immelt, chairman and CEO of General Electric; William Hawkins, chairman and CEO of Medtronic Inc.; and Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet.
The forum, which is expected to draw hundreds of health care-related professionals from across industries, will feature a series of panel discussions covering such topics as economics and health care, the aging population, medical technology innovation, wellness and prevention, global health issues and health care delivery systems.
The university said the 2011 event will come two years after its first Global Business Forum, which attracted nearly 700 professionals.
"Like our first Global Business Forum, which was held in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the 2011 conference will provide an unparalleled opportunity for deep discussion on some of the most critical issues of our time — areas where business and health care intersect," commented Barbara Kahn, dean of the University of Miami School of Business Administration, which is organizing the forum. "With the participation of schools across campus, this will once again be a truly interdisciplinary program that cuts across industry sectors, much like the business of health care does."
