FMI Report: Shoppers Link Eating Well to Health and Well-Being

For grocers, the trend underscores the demand for fresh, healthy, and convenient products that support both physical and mental well-being.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Health is at the center of new food routines this fall, as shoppers define “eating well” through nutrition, fresh meals, and mindful choices, according to the latest U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends: New Routines report from FMI – The Food Industry Association.

The research shows that while “eating well” varies by occasion, with health prioritized at breakfast and convenience shaping snacking, consumers consistently connect their food choices with wellness. More than half of Americans report preparing more meals at home, dining at consistent times, and focusing on fresh ingredients.

How do you define basic food needs?

“Shoppers are showing us that food is more than just fuel — it’s a way to connect, celebrate and create traditions,” Leslie G. Sarasin, president and CEO of FMI, said. “Our research shows that even as lifestyles evolve, shoppers are finding comfort and joy in routines that bring people together, and that’s a powerful signal for our industry and our mission to feed and enrich lives.”

Shared meals also play a role in well-being. The report notes that 36% of shoppers eat dinner at home with others every day, reinforcing both nutritional and emotional benefits.

David Fikes, executive director of the FMI Foundation, tied the findings to September’s National Family Meals Month™.

“September is National Family Meals Month™, which is a perfect complement to what we’re seeing in shopper trends — Americans value routines that bring them together around the table,” said David Fikes, executive director of the FMI Foundation. “When families share more meals, they not only nourish their bodies with healthier foods; they strengthen relationships, improve communication and create lasting memories. The benefits of sharing meals go far beyond the plate and can be enjoyed year-round.”
