LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Home care provider ResCare Inc. plans to offer Walgreen Co.’s DailyMed prescription service.
ResCare said Tuesday that it has signed a national affiliation agreement with the drug chain as it rolls out the DailyMed by Walgreens service, which provides a safe, effective way for patients to organize and keep track of multiple medications.
With DailyMed, patients get individual, pre-sorted packets that indicate date and time that certain medications are scheduled to be taken. ResCare noted that the service aids seniors and other patients with complex prescription regimens, since the 30-day supply drug packets are sealed and clearly marked to eliminate the need to sort through multiple medications with different daily dosages and timing.
Plans call for the program to launch in California this month and then deploy nationwide during the year, according to ResCare. Under the affiliation agreement, Walgreens will feature ResCare HomeCare education materials with its DailyMed products. ResCare employees will discuss DailyMed with their clients as part of its services.
ResCare HomeCare provides seniors personal support, homemaking, respite and companion care and other services so they can stay in their own homes longer. The company pointed out that the daily management of medications can become a challenge for many seniors — especially missed doses — as the number of prescriptions they need increases.
"Our ultimate goal is to drive down the cost of health care while helping seniors maintain their independence and good health for as long as possible," Ralph Gronefeld, president and chief executive officer of ResCare, said in a statement. "Working with Walgreens to help accomplish these goals is exciting for ResCare, but most importantly it benefits the people we serve."
The nation’s largest privately owned home care company, ResCare serves about 60,000 people daily in 43 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and Puerto Rico.
