COVINGTON, Ky. ‒ Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced yesterday a $110 million settlement with Kroger in his lawsuit against the supermarket chain for its role in the opioid crisis.

Coleman said Kroger fueled the opioid epidemic by prescribing the drugs with "shockingly" little oversight or means of reporting suspicious activity while speaking at a press conference event at the Life Learning Center across the Ohio River from Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky

"This massive grocery chain that asked for our trust and our business allowed the fire of addiction to spread across the commonwealth leaving pain and leaving so much brokenness in its aftermath," Coleman said.

“We are pleased to have reached a settlement ... and we hope the funds will be used to combat opioid abuse in the region," said a Kroger spokeswoman. "However, the claims that Kroger did not have internal training or guardrails around filling prescriptions for opioids are patently false."

Coleman added that the settlement with Kroger is separate from the $1.2 billon multistate settlement Kroger reached with dozens of states in 2023.
