PALM BEACH, Fla. — A total of $230,000 has been awarded to pharmacy schools by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation via its 2013 Pharmacy Partners Scholarship Program.

Announced at the NACDS Annual Meeting here, this year’s Pharmacy Partners Scholarship award recipients were chosen from 48 applicant pharmacy schools and colleges nationwide. Scholarships were awarded to 12 accredited pharmacy learning institutions.

The scholarship program provided awards ranging from $10,000 to $40,000 to each pharmacy school’s scholarship fund to help pharmacy students working to attain their professional Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Awards are made based on the recipients’ new and innovative community-based programs; percentage of graduates seeking community pharmacy positions; recent or ongoing community practice research initiatives; number of community pharmacy residencies and shared faculty positions; and patient-centered course work such as medication therapy management certification.

This year, the program was restructured to reflect a merit-based approach in awards, according to the NACDS Foundation. The new process aims to recognize schools and colleges of pharmacy that stress advancing and improving patient care through community pharmacy and have implemented innovative programs to ready students for those new roles.

The 2013 Pharmacy Partners Scholarship Program was supported by a group of 27 benefactors, comprised of NACDS chain members and associate members.

The 12 scholarships were awarded as follows: $40,000 Apotex Corp. Wayne Roberts Memorial Scholarship to the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy; $30,000 Lilly USA Scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy; $30,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy; $20,000 Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Scholarship to the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; $20,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University School of Pharmacy-Boston; $20,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy; $20,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy; $10,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy; $10,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy; $10,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; $10,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy; and a $10,000 NACDS Foundation Scholarship to the Western New England University College of Pharmacy.
