NACDS Foundation grants fund Rx school health fairs

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation has announced the recipients of the "Million Hearts Team Up, Pressure Down" public education grants.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation has announced the recipients of the "Million Hearts Team Up, Pressure Down" public education grants.

The NACDS Foundation said Tuesday that its support will provide $35,000 in funding for community health fairs hosted by 15 schools and colleges of pharmacy nationwide during September.

Team Up, Pressure Down is a pharmacy-based program within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) "Million Hearts" initiative, which aims to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years by raising public awareness about blood pressure control, cholesterol management and smoking cessation.

Next month, student pharmacists and faculty members from the selected schools and colleges of pharmacy will host community health fairs offering student pharmacist-led blood pressure screenings, cholesterol screenings and medication reviews.

"Student pharmacists will have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their communities through preventive care services," NACDS Foundation president Kathleen Jaeger said in a statement. "The NACDS Foundation is thrilled to work with these schools to improve the health and wellness of patients from across the country, and we are excited to continue to support the great work of HHS as they work toward the goal of preventing 1 million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years."

Selected from about 70 applicant schools and colleges of pharmacy, the recipients of the grants were Chicago State University, Duquesne University, Harding University, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences-Boston, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences-Worcester, Roosevelt University, Texas A&M, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the University of Minnesota, the University of Mississippi, the University of New Mexico, the University of North Carolina, the University of Oklahoma, the University of South Florida and Western New England University.
