ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to study the health impact of pharmacist-led medication therapy management (MTM) in care teams.
In announcing the RFP on Thursday, the NACDS Foundation said the $750,000 grant opportunity is intended to fund two grants to nonprofit research organizations or academic institutions over a two-year period. Specifically, the research would assess the impact of medication management services on patient health outcomes in medical homes or accountable care organization (ACO) delivery models.
The foundation noted that, currently, many public and private projects are exploring patient-centered care teams and that experts have called for the evaluation of medication management as a vehicle to improve the quality of care and, in turn, patient health outcomes.
"The utilization of care teams is increasingly recognized as an effective strategy to remedy the often fragmented health care delivery system by coordinating treatment to improve health outcomes," NACDS Foundation president Kathleen Jaeger said in a statement. "Medication management research will help identify opportunities for medical homes and ACOs to better meet their patient health outcome goals."
Plans call for the selected research projects to start this fall and last about two years in order to capture long-term health outcomes and gauge the effect of medication management services.
