WASHINGTON — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores is highlighting the expanding role of pharmacies in supporting better nutrition and healthier communities as part of National Nutrition Month, underscoring the sector’s growing importance in preventive care and everyday wellness.
Through its Nourish My Health initiative, NACDS and its member companies are positioning pharmacies as accessible, trusted destinations where patients can receive guidance on vitamins and supplements, explore healthier product options, and access personalized support tied to their overall health.
“Pharmacies play a critical role in helping patients connect nutrition to their overall health,” said Steven C. Anderson, president and CEO of NACDS. “Throughout National Nutrition Month and year-round, pharmacies provide trusted, accessible care that empowers people to make informed choices and manage their health with confidence.”
Throughout March, NACDS member pharmacies have emphasized a range of nutrition-focused services, including individualized guidance on dietary needs, one-on-one lifestyle support, and expanded assortments of wellness products. Many locations are also increasing their offerings of clean-label, high-protein, and plant-based items, reflecting evolving consumer demand for healthier choices.
With nearly 90% of Americans living within five miles of a pharmacy, NACDS noted that pharmacies are often the most convenient point of access for nutrition-related guidance. Pharmacists play a key role in translating complex health and dietary information into practical steps, particularly for patients managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.
The association also stressed that continued progress will depend on supportive public policy. NACDS is advocating for measures that ensure fair reimbursement, expand pharmacist-provided services such as those outlined in the Ensuring Community Access to Pharmacist Services Act, build on recent pharmacy benefit manager reform efforts, and further integrate pharmacies into broader public health and prevention strategies.
Observed each March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, National Nutrition Month promotes informed food choices and healthy habits. NACDS said its Nourish My Health initiative will continue to reinforce the connection between nutrition and health while highlighting the role pharmacies play in improving outcomes at the community level.
