NACDS highlights the role of pharmacies in protecting brain health

NACDS's Nourish My Health initiative highlights pharmacists' role in promoting health, linking patients to screenings, and encouraging earlier cognitive evaluations.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores is observing Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month by highlighting the expanding role community pharmacies play in promoting brain health, supporting early detection and connecting patients with cognitive care resources.

Through its Nourish My Health initiative, NACDS and its member pharmacies emphasize the importance of lifelong brain health and the value of early intervention, noting that only about half of people living with Alzheimer's disease receive a diagnosis, thereby delaying access to treatment and support.

Because Americans visit pharmacies nearly 10 times more often than they see a primary care provider, pharmacists are well positioned to encourage healthy lifestyle habits, answer questions about cognitive health, and help identify when patients should seek further evaluation, according to the association.

During Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, participating pharmacies are providing counseling on brain-healthy habits, including physical activity, nutrition, mental engagement, and regular health monitoring. They are also connecting patients with free memory and cognitive health screenings and offering evidence-based educational resources for patients and caregivers.

NACDS cited research indicating that four in five Americans report that healthcare services are easy to access at a pharmacy, underscoring the profession’s role in delivering convenient preventive care.

“NACDS is proud to support the national focus on brain health and to advance a future shaped by prevention, earlier detection, and stronger outcomes,” said Steven C. Anderson, president and CEO of NACDS. “Pharmacies offer convenient, ongoing access to the counseling, monitoring, and guidance that help people protect their cognitive health and act early when concerns arise.”

NACDS said it will continue to promote accessible, personalized care through its Nourish My Health initiative while advocating for policies that strengthen pharmacies’ role as frontline healthcare destinations for patients and caregivers.
