ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Community Pharmacists Association has installed new officers and board members for its 2012-13 term.
NCPA said Wednesday that Donnie Calhoun, who owns two pharmacies in Anniston, Ala., has been named president. He is also the 2012 president of the Alabama Board of Pharmacy.
Calhoun, who takes over the NCPA president post from Lonny Wilson of Pharmacy Providers of Oklahoma, serves on the NCPA board and as a national director for Pharmacist’s Mutual Insurance Co. In the past, he has served on the boards of the National Home Infusion Association and Alabama Pharmacy Association, and he is a past president of the Alabama Independent Drugstore Association.
The association noted that Calhoun also is involved with teaching pharmacy students as an adjunct professor at the Samford and Auburn university schools of pharmacy. He also has received many awards, including distinguished young pharmacist (1991) and the Alabama Pharmacy Association Pharmacist of the Year award (2005).
"We congratulate Donnie Calhoun on becoming NCPA president," stated NCPA chief executive officer B. Douglas Hoey. "Whether at the local, state or federal level, Donnie has been an effective advocate for independent community pharmacists and the patients they serve. Where there is an impediment, he tries to remove it; where there is a shortcoming, he tries to fill the void. He believes, based on considerable evidence, that independent community pharmacy can improve health outcomes and reduce costs. He will work tirelessly to help spread the word throughout both the private and public sectors."
Calhoun commented, "I am very excited and honored to become NCPA president. I have a series of goals to achieve, most prominently is expanding the recognition of pharmacists as health care providers so they have a more central role in the emerging paradigm of coordinated care. Once our expertise is fully appreciated and compensated patients, health plan sponsors and other health care providers will benefit greatly."
The following independent pharmacy owners were named to positions on the NCPA board: Mark Riley of Little Rock, ark., as president-elect, Bradly Arthur of Buffalo, N.Y. as chairman; and John Sherrer (Marietta, Ga.), Keith Hodges (Gloucester, Va.), DeAnn Mullins (Lynn Haven, Fla.), David Smith (Indiana, Pa.) and Bill Osborn (Miami, Okla.) as board members. Wilson takes the title of immediate past president.
Elected as officers were Brian Caswell of Baxter Springs, Kan., as first vice president; Michele Belcher of Grants Pass, Ore., as second vice president; Hugh Chancy of Hahira, Ga., as third vice president; Jeff Carson of San Antonio as fourth vice president; and Lea Wolsoncroft of Birmingham, Ala., as fifth vice president.
NCPA noted that Wolsoncroft is the newest member to join the association’s leadership, which occurred with her induction at the House of Delegates. In 2003 she opened Kids Meds Pharmacy, which specializes in prescription drugs for children.
The 115th NCPA Annual Convention and Trade Exposition is scheduled for Oct. 12 to 16, 2013, at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Fla.
