LANHAM, Md. — Tim Lowe has been named president of Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, a Supervalu Inc. supermarket chain, and is slated to take over the post next week.

Lowe is currently senior vice president of operations at Shoppers. The food and drug retailer said Monday that he will assume his new role on Oct. 11.

He replaces Dick Bergman, who retired from Shoppers on Oct. 1.

"Shoppers enjoys a long-standing tradition of serving customers in this market," Lowe said in a statement. "I look forward to continuing that tradition and working hard to exceed our customers’ expectations every day."

Lowe brings nearly 20 years of retail experience to his new position. He first joined Supervalu in 2009 as the senior vice president of operations at Shoppers. The company said that he returns to Supervalu after a brief tenure at Burlington Coat Factory as senior vice president of operations. Lowe’s retail grocery experience also includes five years with Meijer Inc., where he was promoted to the role of vice president of general merchandise for retail stores, and seven years at Walmart, where his most recent position was regional manager of retail stores.

"Tim is an experienced leader at Shoppers and is well-positioned to grow the organization in the marketplace," commented Brian Huff, senior vice president of specialty retail at Supervalu, who has assumed the president’s duties at Shoppers in the interim.

Shoppers Food & Pharmacy has 62 stores in the Baltimore, northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., markets.
