WASHINGTON – The National Retail Federation has released its 2026 Top 100 Retailers list, with Walmart once again ranked No. 1 as the nation’s largest retailer by U.S. retail sales.

Compiled by Kantar, the annual ranking is based on retailers’ 2025 U.S. retail sales and excludes non-retail revenue to provide a clearer picture of retail performance.

“Despite significant economic challenges over the past year, this year’s Top 100 Retailers list highlights a resilient group of companies,” said Mark Mathews, NRF’s chief economist and executive director of research. “They are adapting to meet changing consumer needs and leaning into new strategies and formats that set them apart.”

Walmart led the list with $579.99 billion in U.S. retail sales, followed by Amazon at $293.85 billion. Costco Wholesale ranked third, with The Kroger Co. and The Home Depot completing the top five.

The top 20 rankings changed little from last year. Ace Hardware moved into the No. 19 position, while Dollar Tree fell to No. 29 after divesting Family Dollar and reporting a 38.1% year-over-year sales decline.

“Companies are doing quite well,” said David Marcotte, senior vice president of global insights and technology at Kantar. “We’re not seeing movement at the top of the rankings, but there is change outside of the top 20 as the mid-tier companies evolve and grow.”

Among the report’s notable trends, regional grocery chains continued to post strong results, with Publix Super Markets and H.E. Butt Grocery outpacing some larger competitors. Discount retailers, including TJX Companies, also benefited from consumers’ continued focus on value.

The report also highlighted the strength of home improvement retailers, with Ace Hardware and True Value Co. benefiting from steady demand for home maintenance projects. DICK’S Sporting Goods was among the year’s biggest movers, climbing eight spots to No. 27 after acquiring Foot Locker, which contributed to a 48.5% increase in U.S. retail sales.

The NRF Top 100 Retailers ranking is based on retailers’ most recent 52- or 53-week annual U.S. retail sales and focuses exclusively on domestic retail operations.
