CHESTNUT RIDGE, N.Y. — Par Pharmaceutical has released testosterone gel 1%, a generic version of AndroGel 1% from AbbVie.

Par said Wednesday that its testosterone gel 1% product is available in 2.5g and 5g aluminum foil packets containing 25 mg or 50 mg of testosterone, respectively.

The company noted that it previously entered into a settlement and license agreement and a consent decree that permit the company to launch the product at this time, which is five years earlier than the expiration of the relevant patent.

Testosterone gel 1% is indicated for replacement therapy in adult men for conditions related to a deficiency or an absence of endogenous testosterone.

Annual U.S. sales of testosterone gel 1% packets total about $206 million, according to IMS Health data reported by Par.
